Third Quarter Grants 2022

During the third quarter of 2022, the Northwest Area Foundation approved 29 grants worth $4,273,750.

The third quarter’s funding supports grants that reflect the new grantmaking approach we began implementing at the start of 2022.

Our grantmaking supports organizations within our region of eight states and 76 Native nations that are advancing long-overdue change in deep connection with the land they inhabit and communities they serve—Native Americans, communities of color, immigrants, refugees, and people in rural areas. They’re on a journey to build social, racial, and economic justice—helping communities thrive on their own terms.

Coalition of Asian American Leaders, as fiscal sponsor for MN8, both of St. Paul, MN, received $75,000 to support hiring a case manager who will provide direct support to individuals and families impacted by deportation and the criminal justice system.
Grant term: Sept. 1, 2022 – Aug. 31, 2023

Emerge Community Development of Minneapolis received $75,000 to support its core workforce development activities: employment coaching, job placement, career training, and the operation of social enterprise businesses.

Equitable Food Initiative of Washington, DC, received $50,000 to support strengthening its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, while measuring the impact of its programs.

First Children’s Finance (FCF) of Minneapolis will receive $100,000 over two years to increase its staff capacity, respond to requests for planning assistance in rural communities, and partner with child care providers to improve its operations. Grant funds are dedicated to FCF’s work in Iowa.

First Nations Development Institute of Longmont, CO, will receive $500,000 over two years to support two of its overarching initiatives: food sovereignty and asset building. The building of strong, diverse, resilient tribal economies will be nurtured through a learning cohort of three tribes, a tribal college, and a Native-led nonprofit.

Homes of Oakridge Human Services of Des Moines, IA, received $75,000 to support its family and workforce programs for immigrants and refugees.

Immigrant Development Center of Moorhead, MN, received $10,000 to support cleanup of building vandalism.

Interfaith Action of Greater St. Paul of St. Paul, MN, received $50,000 to support the American Indian Economic Mobility Hub Navigator.
Grant term: Nov. 1, 2022 – Oct. 31, 2023

Lakota Fund, as fiscal sponsor for South Dakota Native Homeownership Coalition, both of Kyle, SD, will receive $150,000 over two years to support a staff position that will create two new statewide homeownership programs.

Latino Economic Development Center of St. Paul, MN, will receive $200,000 over two years to support its efforts to achieve its vision for systems change for Latino entrepreneurs throughout Minnesota through investments in its organizational infrastructure.

Migizi Communications Inc. of Minneapolis received $200,000 to support a portion of the remaining costs for opening its newly constructed office (specifically furnishings not used in offices).

The Montana Racial Equity Project of Bozeman, MT, received $50,000 in general operating support.

Native CDFI Network Inc. of Washington, DC, will receive $500,000 over two years to support its efforts to bring together Native CDFIs to share best practices, advance their collective priorities, and advocate for economic justice in Native communities.

Neighborhood Development Center Inc. of St. Paul, MN, will receive $300,000 over three years to support an equitable economic development approach in its efforts spanning from entrepreneur supports to community-owned real estate.

NeighborImpact of Redmond, OR, received $75,000 to support its HomeSource program, which provides financial education, savings, and homeownership programs to residents in a three-county area of central Oregon.

Oweesta Corporation of Longmont, CO, will receive $500,000 over two years to help strengthen its networks, provide resources, and advocate for policy and systems change that lead to economic justice in Indian Country.

Prepare and Prosper of St. Paul, MN, received $185,000 to support its core services (including tax preparation, financial products and services, and financial coaching), advocacy, and systems change efforts.

Project IOWA (Iowa Opportunities for Workforce Advancement) of Des Moines, IA, received $75,000 to support a career training program for low-income individuals.

Sharing Our Roots of Northfield, MN, received $250,000 to support its efforts to bring together emerging and immigrant farmers to support a shared economy vision of growing cultural foods and building small agriculture businesses.

Tacoma Urban League of Tacoma, WA, received $100,000 to support its CEO transition, advocacy work, and various programs.

Tanka Fund of Kyle, SD, will receive $250,000 over two years to support its three areas of programming for Native buffalo producers: technical assistance, re-granting, and the incubation of Tanka Resilient Agriculture Company (TRAC).

Warm Springs Community Action Team of Warm Springs, OR, will receive $500,000 over three years to support its efforts to provide economic and community opportunities for tribal citizens and to maintain its core programs, engage more youth, and support the planning and design of a new market.
Grant term: Oct. 1, 2022 – Sept. 30, 2025
